Gabe's Blog: I faced one of my greatest fears. And won.

Mon, 17 Nov 2008 15:21:02 +0000

Last night I faced one of the greatest fears I had ever known.  For years I fought an internal battle knowing some day I would have to face my demon face to face.

Last night it happened.  Of course i’m talking about seeing Shiny Toy Guns in concert.

It is written that many years ago, in the prime of what is known as the “Kill Hannah Days” there was a show at the House of Blues.  An act unknown to Gabe performed first.  The configuration of said band had the configuration of something that should have been wonderful.  Instead, the performance came off to be explained, even years later, by Gabe as “the worst performance by a band ever.”

Have you ever seen a crowd laugh at a band?  Like.. actually… laugh?  I did that night.

But that’s the past.  I’ll never forget what I heard on that stage that night, but one must move on.  To live in the past is to ignore the future.  And the future included me here in Omaha, Nebraska, with Shiny Toy Guns.

The show was really great.  The opener, who I don’t even know the name of, was awesome.  I need to find their album.  The second group, “Your Vegas”… eh, not so much.  Too much formulaic ego rock from them for my taste.

But Shiny Toy Guns did a really awesome set.  The light show was a little harsh, but I think it’s because it was a small venue.. and a stage show of that magnitude is made for a larger venue.  So you’re standing right in front of these things flashing right into your head.  They “fixed” the largest issue of the band, the hot singer chick.  She sang less, and when it was her solo vocals.. there was a second vocal track of her.  Very smart.  And I forget how many great songs they have until they played them.  Cool.

And the best part of all was finally seeing a synthesizer on an Omaha stage.  All i’ve seen have been acoustic guitars for the most part.  It’s great to see a mac on stage, a drummer with a click track, and a few nord leads cranking out some noises.  Even a vocoder!  mmmm..

I still like Omaha.  I like it more with vocoders, though.

Gabe's Blog: An Omaha update

Thu, 13 Nov 2008 19:37:20 +0000

So Monday I finally got my stuff delivered.  Any drama with the moving company is officially with the past and I can move forward; and that feels good.

First thing I setup was my surround sound in the livingroom.  I missed having some cranking tunes.  Second was my AppleTV, then connected to the stereo reciever for some 5.1 goodness.

It’s also nice to have my clothes back.  Actually, it’s nice to have *everything* back.  That first night sleeping in my bed again was certainly a treat.  And being able to use my computer not sitting on the floor is certainly nice as well.

I’ve been keeping busy.  Went to a show at The Waiting Room on Tuesday night with Jillian.  Last night Kat and I met up for coffee and talked geek for a a couple hours.  Came  home and worked for a bit after that.

Omaha loves their coffee, and that’s pretty sweet.  I love coffee too.  Just saying.

So Shiny Toy Guns are playing on Sunday.  It’s sold out but I found tickets on craigslist.  $45/ea.  Should I grab a couple?  I’d like to go, but i dunno… hmm.

So yeah.  I feel like I have other things to blog about, but i’m not sure what they are at the moment.  I’ll get back to you.

Gabe's Blog: I like Omaha

Thu, 06 Nov 2008 01:49:29 +0000

I just ventured to downtown Omaha. It’s the area I haven’t been to yet. I went off the beaten path and found the area I heard so much about called “Old Market”. For a few blocks here, I don’t feel like i’m in Omaha anymore.

I found a coffee shop with wifi here, and that’s where i’m blogging from. Before this I went to a couple record stores. RECORD stores. With posters, and old vinyl, and all the kind of niche stuff you’d only see in chicago small independent shops. They have Omaha small independent shops, and I love it.

I really came to find food, but i’m so busy looking at all the awesome places I’ll just have to get something to eat on the way back home.

Given all the shitty stuff that’s going on with this move, I’m happy tonight.

Gabe's Blog: I can’t believe how bad this move is

Wed, 05 Nov 2008 15:29:38 +0000

I’m tempted to get in my car.  Drive to Skokie, IL, and fucking kill all those motherfuckers at Olympic Relocation and Storage.  Now they’re telling me they don’t know when they’ll be able to deliver my things, but it won’t be this week.  It might not even be next week.  Probably the week after.
Jesus fucking christ.  I own two shirts and two pairs of pants for work.  I guess I have to go and purchase a whole new set of clothes because they’re not interested in delivering me my others.  I don’t have anything at this point.  I’ll even have to go out and get ethernet cables for when my cable internet is installed on Friday.  I don’t have anything.  I had to go to target to buy a blanket the other night.  I sat at a pizza place last night because I figured it would be easier to eat there by myself than bring a pizza home and eat it on my floor.  That’s some sad shit.
This move at this point is the biggest fucking mistake i’ve ever made in my life.  And most expensive mistake.  All this coming out of my own pocket and I have nothing to show for it but an air mattress my parents let me borrow.

I’m trying to keep calm here, but it’s not working.

Gabe's Blog: Gabe’s final time in Chicago and the big move

Tue, 04 Nov 2008 14:12:02 +0000

The final moving process started Friday night when I said goodbye to all of my friends one last time.  It just so happened that it was also Halloween.  I’m not sure if that made it easier or more difficult to see everyone that I wanted to.  There’s still others I didn’t get a chance to spend time with and say my final goodbyes, but I suppose that’s going to happen with anyone.  All in all it was a really great time with Marissa, Danny, Luz, Sean, Frank, Michelle, Kate, and Allison (who actually recognized my costume from Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job.)  Here’s a photo of me and Danny.  He was Doctor Rockso from Metalocolypse on Adult Swim.

I found out Friday that the moving company wouldn’t be able to deliver the stuff the same day.  And that my interpretation of the question “Would you be available for delivery right away?” was obviously far different than theirs.  So stuff that I packed I had to try and rush to fit in my car so I had at least a couple things for me between the time I arrived in Omaha and the time I got my stuff.

Saturday morning I woke up tired but optimistic.  I contacted the moving company a couple days before to find out exactly how much I owed them at pickup, and then how much at delivery.  So I had two postal money orders (they don’t take credit cards) made out to pay them both ends of the trip.  This all changed, however, when my $1300 moving company showed up and said “This is going to be far more.”

I told the sales person from Olympic Relocation and Storage exactly what stuff I had, and she told me exactly how much I’d owe.  There was no “unless” or “but…”.  It was “You owe this.  Period.”  But within a couple hours my $1300 move ballooned to a hefty $2700 move due to things like “We can’t take bags of things, i’m putting them in a box for you.  But i’m charging labor.  And over charging for my own boxes.”  I got *very* upset.  It’s been a long time since I last went off like that, but I was in panic mode.  I started throwing out things that would be cheaper to replace than to ship.  I got a certain amount of money from my company to do this relocation and within a couple hours it was all gone.  I still had rent to pay.  I had internet to sign up for.  And all the other crap that goes along with moving.  Plus that fact my landlord wasn’t giving me back my security deposit because I broke my lease.  I didn’t know what to do.

So I exercised the option, being they couldn’t/wouldn’t deliver my stuff right away anyway, to have them wait until Friday (or later if they feel like it) to deliver my stuff.  That way I’ll be paid again, I can pay my rent, and I’ll be able to pay the movers when they come.  I doubt they would have came any earlier than Friday anyway, but this way I know I’d be able to afford my stuff when they get there.
By the time they left it was late.  My parents gave me the option to stay with them in Lake Geneva at a time share they had open there instead of driving all night into Omaha.  Plus my leasing company hasn’t yet given me my keys or anything, so I pretty much had to stay somewhere until tomorrow.  I didn’t realise Lake Geneva was 2 hours away.  Argh.  More driving on top of the 7hrs I had the next day wasn’t a pleasing thought, but I went anyway and increased my 7hr drive Sunday to an 8hr drive.

Sunday comes and 8 hours later I find myself in beautiful Omaha Nebraska.  I meet with my leasing company, pay my first month rent, sign my lease, and get my keys.  I finally have my apartment.  A very dead and empty apartment.

I pump up my air mattress my dad let me use and start unpacking a couple of the bags of stuff I ended up bringing with me.  A water pitcher, some coffee mugs, a can of coke, cookies my mom made me, some frozen goods, and random bags of clothes to wash.  I wasn’t going to end up washing clothes so I ran to target to buy some work clothes for the next day.  Luckily I did pack my work shoes in my car and forgot I did.  But pretty much everything else I own is in storage at this point.

So Friday, hopefully, I’ll have my stuff.  I also have my cable internet scheduled to be installed Friday morning.

I guess that’s a detailed enough story for now.  But I’m here for good now.  We’ll see how that goes.

Gabe's Blog: My last day at the Chicago office

Thu, 30 Oct 2008 19:46:11 +0000

So today i’m saying my goodbye’s at the Chicago office.  There’s a get together after work today at a local pub and it seems like a decent amount of people are going to be showing up.

Just got back a few ago from my last ROM coffee run.  My secret crush, Lilly, wasn’t there, though.

My desk is clean, things are packed up for me to bring home… another chapter closed in the big book of relocation.

Tomorrow I have to finish packing.  That’s primary goal #1.  I’m pretty much done anyway, but I’m being slightly paranoid about it.  If time allows I’m trying to piece together a Casey Tatum costume for Halloween tomorrow night.  If I can’t, no biggie.  But I am going to go to Flat Top for dinner tomorrow and then hit a few of the Halloween hot spots.  I can’t be out tooo late, though.  The movers will be there at 8am, and I need to be in tip-top, not hungover, shape.

But I guess everything is done.  Nothing more really to say.  I’ll take some photos the next couple days with me and friends and then things begin anew in Nebraska.

Crazy.  Crazy awesome?

Gabe's Blog: 7 days to go/Photo montage

Sat, 25 Oct 2008 21:48:12 +0000

Seven days from today I’ll be on my way to Omaha. A moving company is coming first thing Saturday morning to put everything on a truck and off I go. Sounds so simple.

In honor of me leaving, I put together a quick collection of some photos of random times/events/entertaining things that took place here. I have another week to make some more great memories, but here’s a little selection so far.

So here’s some awesome photos. Enjoy.

Gabe's Blog: Chronicling my time in Chicago #3

Sat, 18 Oct 2008 16:27:37 +0000

So I’ve been back now since Tuesday night. I can say it’s slightly odd being back. I had a nice going away lunch with my old team Wednesday, and went out last night after work with some of the Chicago people for dinner and drinks.

I’m seeing more and more people moving on with their lives without me in it. Makes sense, and completely expected, but often hard to watch. People I would be spending more time with and be close to, but given the limited time it’s easier just to let things move on by. I’m trying not to completely take this position on things, however. Saw Karen Thursday, seeing Garnet Sunday, seeing Missy Monday. On top of that I have quite the list of people that I also need to get in touch with, possibly for the last time, before I go.

13 days.

But, I got an apartment! The one I wanted, and it’s pretty great. 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, walk-in closet, and it’s larger than my current one. I’m quite happy with that. If only for the fact I was quite worried I was going to go back to Omaha without a place to live.

I took Tuesday off. Figured a dedicated day to do whatever I need to do would be good. I may have to take another before I leave, we’ll see.

What do I have for plans tonight? Nothing! Ack! I better change that.
